Civic Engagement in Higher Education

College and university campuses nationwide realize the importance of offering community service and service-learning experiences that will benefit both students and communities. Rahima has been instrumental in developing a presence for service-learning on The University of Iowa campus.

As a member of the UI’s Civic Engagement Program Advisory Council, Rahima helped develop the mission, vision, goals, and strategic plans to guide the program. Rahima can provide an expert “outsider’s” perspective to assist campus civic engagement and service-learning programs in visioning their next steps and tackling the challenges of meeting community and campus needs.

Many campus civic engagment programs focus on helping college students find placements in the community and many of those placements often involve working with children. The Joining Hands Service-Learning Tool Kits will give college students a brainstormed set of ideas for service projects, reflections questions, curricular lessons and more on the following topics: animals, environment, intergenerational relationships, and poverty/hunger. Through her committed service to the Civic Engagement Program advisory board, Professor Wade has provided vital guidance and direction needed to grow a young program and focus its efforts. In addition to the wisdom and insight she consistently contributes to board deliberations, Professor Wade has graciously left an enduring imprint on the program by crafting the CEP tag line and developing the seven core values included in the Civic Engagement Program's Strategic Plan for 2008-2011.
