About Rahima Wade, Ed. D.

Rahima WadeDr. Rahima Wade has been consulting on community service-learning and civic engagement since 1992. Her work has focused on keynote presentations, workshops, program development, publications, and evaluation with school districts, universities, colleges, educational organizations and state departments of education nationwide.

Rahima has offered staff development workshops for K-12 teachers across the country and worked as a trainer and peer mentor for the National Youth Leadership Council. She has developed curriculum with civic and service-oriented lessons for Kids Voting USA, the Annenberg Public Policy Center, and the Chicago Video Project. Rahima has written and directed 10 grants focused on service-learning program development in K-12 and college level teacher education programs.

Rahima was instrumental in developing service-learning practice at The University of Iowa and among the Regents teacher education programs in the state. She has been an integral member of the University of Iowa’s Civic Engagement Program Advisory Board. In a national network of more than 40 teacher education programs, Rahima served as Project Director for the National Service-Learning in Teacher Education Partnership. She also served as a member of the planning team for the International Center for Service-Learning in Teacher Education.

As a social studies professor at The University of Iowa, Rahima has authored or edited more than 40 publications on service-learning, including Community service-learning: A guide to including service in the public school curriculum (State University of New York Press, 1997) and Building bridges: Connecting classroom and community through service-learning in social studies (National Council for the Social Studies, 2000). Rahima’s most recent publications include Social Studies for Social Justice: Teaching strategies for the elementary classroom (Teachers College Press, 2007) and CiviConnections: Linking historical inquiry with community service-learning (National Council for the Social Studies, 2007).

Rahima was selected as the John Glenn Scholar for Service Learning in Teacher Education in 2004 and was a finalist for the Campus Compact Ehrlich Faculty Service Learning Award in 2006.
